Seriously—you can read a book and empathize with the protagonist. You can root for the main character, hope they get out of their jam. And if the writer’s a good one, they’ll propel you forward so that you find yourself speed-reading the pages that lead toward the final conclusion. A song, though? You don’t just feel for the main character—you
become the main character. A really good pop / country / rock song makes you experience the drama yourself.
...That’s exactly what happens to me every time I hear Zac Brown’s “Colder Weather.” I swear, my teeth chatter and I ache all over. Beautiful stuff. Powerful stuff…Even in this stripped-down version.
(My favorite version, though, is still the performance featuring Amos Lee at CMT Artists of the Year).

I have to agree! Although it's rare for someone to blow me away with their lyrics. It's hard to find quality lyrics in today's music, because it's all about repetition and what's catchy. Aside from a select few artists, I'm not a fan of rap for that reason. But there are a few of them that catch my attention, and there's a female rapper, Dessa, who gives me chills. Her lyrics are phenomenal, but she's also a spoken word poet so her passion comes through in her music too. I love music that has an impact on me! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great song. And I had never heard of Zac Brown --- so I checked our library's catalog and found we have a CD. Grabbing it now. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
That's a beautiful song. I just got chills. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree, Medeia--gorgeous song. And Jo, you're in for a treat! I honestly think Zac Brown will still be making incredible music forty years from now. Loads of talent there...
