DEAR BLOGGERS - FERAL IS YOURS

Yesterday, I sent my notes on the first-pass pages for FERAL to my editor.  This was my last chance to make any changes to the manuscript.

I have to admit, I had a funny feeling sending the book along yesterday.  You'll be hearing more about the journey FERAL took from first draft to publication in the next few months, but I initially drafted the book a decade ago, as an MG novel.  Claire, my protagonist, has gone through about a hundred name do-overs and personality revamps; she's changed more than any MC in any of my books, actually.

Now, though, I have to let her go.  Claire's not mine anymore; she belongs to my readers and bloggers.  There's a slight sadness to letting a project go, but there's also a new excitement to it, too.  Claire's yours; I hope the journey you'll take with Claire as a reader will be every bit as fulfilling as mine was as a writer.

Can't wait to introduce you...

FERAL FIRST-PASS PAGES + UPDATED JACKET COPY

I'm now deep in the midst of reading the first-pass pages for FERAL, due out this August.  (Actually, it's first-pass for HarperCollins, but last-pass for me.  This is my last chance to rake my fine-toothed comb through the manuscript.  Copyedits are always such a nerve-wracking and exciting process...)

FERAL also has an updated jacket copy on Goodreads, which is slightly different than the jacket copy released during the FERAL reveal...Gotta say, I love the new copy:

The Lovely Bones meets Black Swan in this haunting psychological thriller with twists and turns that will make you question everything you think you know.

It’s too late for you. You’re dead. Those words continue to haunt Claire Cain months after she barely survived a brutal beating in Chicago. So when her father is offered a job in another state, Claire is hopeful that getting out will offer her a way to start anew.

But when she arrives in Peculiar, Missouri, Claire feels an overwhelming sense of danger, and her fears are confirmed when she discovers the body of a popular high school student in the icy woods behind the school, surrounded by the town’s feral cats. While everyone is quick to say it was an accident, Claire knows there’s more to it, and vows to learn the truth about what happened.

But the closer she gets to uncovering the mystery, the closer she also gets to realizing a frightening reality about herself and the damage she truly sustained in that Chicago alley….

Holly Schindler’s gripping story is filled with heart-stopping twists and turns that will keep readers guessing until the very last page.

WARMER SEASONS

By now, it's not news at all that we're having an utterly rotten winter here in the Ozarks.  But I just can't seem to bring myself to take pictures of the massive inches of snow or the icicles hanging off the house.  It's evidence of melting—the sight of the ground poking through the white stuff—that makes me want to break out the camera.

I think I just prefer the look of a good thaw...I like the look of a cold, hard time giving way to a warmer season...

CRISSA-JEAN CHAPPELL'S MORE THAN GOOD ENOUGH (+ GIVEAWAY)

The fabulous Crissa-Jean Chappell's got a new book releasing January 8 (just two days before my birthday...what a good present, hint-hint).

Half native. Half white.
One hundred percent nothing.
My mom doesn’t want me. My dad just got out of jail. They want me to go live with him on the reservation, in the Everglades. Trouble is, everybody there just ignores me.
At least I get to work with Pippa on my film project at school. We used to be friends when we were like twelve. Now that we’re hanging out again it’s like old times—except she’s way cuter.
The thing is, I don’t belong anywhere. I don’t fit in on the rez, and I suck at school. My dad thinks I’m an idiot, but Pippa thinks I’m all good.
I don’t know what to think. Am I bad news or am I more than good enough?

 Praise:
“Powerful and satisfying.”—Geoff Herbach, author Nothing Special, winner of the 2013 Minnesota Book Award for Young People’s Literature
"[C]ompelling and emotionally nuanced."—Kirkus Reviews

Crissa's also doing a giveaway for the pub date.  Here's the 411:

CHRISTMAS LOVE

I dig Christmas.  I love the smell of pine and little white lights and decorating the house and wrapping gifts.  I love carols and stockings and made-for-TV holiday flicks and carving the roast beast.
Jake and I both also love absurdly dorky Christmas sweaters...This year, I have to admit, our sweaters are awesome in their badness...

If Thanksgiving is the holiday to pause and let yourself truly feel all that you have to be grateful for, then Christmas, I’ve always figured, is the holiday to do something to show the people in your life how important they are to you—and it never has to involve spending a ton of money.  It’s a card filled with well-wishes; it’s an unexpected plate of homemade cookies; it’s taking a moment to share a cup of cocoa and a long talk at a kitchen table; it’s making plans for a new year together, while tingling with excitement.

…Since 2010, when A BLUE SO DARK released, I've always included my readers on my gratitude list.  And they're right at the top of my list again this year; they've been so incredible as I made my announcements regarding my forthcoming books (a YA, FERAL, and a middle grade, THE JUNCTION OF SUNSHINE AND LUCKY).  In all honesty, connecting with and getting to know my readers has become every bit as enjoyable to me as actually writing my books.

As I wrap up the year, my thoughts keep turning back toward my readers, and about how I can do more to show my gratitude, especially as my two books in development near publication—how I can connect with them even more in the future.  For those of you who haven’t yet, please do sign up for my mailing list, to keep in touch with all these new ideas.

Here’s wishing all of you a pleasant end to ’12, and here’s hoping that ’13 brings growth, comfort, pleasant surprises, and the kind of exciting developments that make your heart feel like it’s about to bust right out of your chest!

THANKSGIVING BEST

My absolute favorite part of the Thanksgiving weekend is putting up the Christmas tree.  Every year, I get hit with the tingly anticipation of what's soon to come as I decorate the interior of the ol' Schindler abode.

...Of course, there are no presents quite yet under our tree, but I feel it's safe to say that will be remedied soon enough...

Anybody else have their tree up?  I'd love to see pics!  Put your links in the comment box below.

'TIL SUMMER

It's most definitely the end of summer here in southwest Missouri...as I type this, I'm wearing a flannel shirt over one of last summer's tanks.

I've also been thinking ahead a bit lately, toward possibilities for trailers for both of my forthcoming books (the MG from Dial and the YA from HarperCollins).  Which means that I've been pretty seriously in-tune with what visuals do for a song as I watch CMT.  (The station's been something of a long-time weekend ritual, along with a big breakfast...The older I get, the more I gravitate toward bluegrass; with a semi-professional bluegrass musician in the family, I tend to think of it as a genetic predisposition.)

I was struck this morning by how really perfect the visuals are for this one.  The scenes match the song and are a perfect match for the feeling I've had the past few days, as my own Missouri summer comes to an end.

Now if I could just somehow channel that when I sit down to put together my next trailer...

IDEA. JUNKIE.

I've said it before: I’m an idea junkie. It’s a bit of a disease, actually. I get two, three chapters into a new project when I'm suddenly bowled over by the concept for yet another book.

When I first began the pursuit of publication, those new ideas would sometimes get me sidetracked. I learned I need to keep a spiral-bound notebook where I can jot down the basics of a new plot, then get back to the project at hand.

Being the idea junkie I am, I recently found myself with a backlog of projects I wanted to get out of outline form…I reorganized my office, getting all my materials in order so that I could move straight from one project to the next, throughout 2012. Ten in all. Yeah. I know. Ten new books. I’ve got the list of books (written in the order in which I'll tackle them) thumbtacked to the wall above my computer, in my office.

My true goal for 2012, though? Not to get all the way through the list.

Writers know the scenario well: you get about halfway through drafting a new book when your editor sends you the revision notes for a book you’ve already got in development. You have to put your current project aside, to work on revisions.

Right now, my agent’s shopping several new books...and I have to admit, my Christmas wish is that my agent will sell those projects, and I’ll be interrupted all through 2012, as the revision notes for those books come in from editors…

At this point, I’ve quit just crossing my fingers. I now have my toes crossed, my eyes crossed, the strands in my ponytail crossed…A little bit of praying doesn't hurt anything, either:

Until then, I’ll be plugging away at the first project on my list!

ANYBODY ELSE OBSESSED?

Do all writers become obsessed with the outdoors? Do we all get so glued to our screens, our laptops, our keyboards, our notebooks, our kitchen tables, that we all just wind up aching for fresh air and green trees?

...All I know is that I'm becoming obsessed. Seriously. I can't get enough of getting outside lately.

Of course, getting outside means getting drenched, too, these days. These pics are of the park out by the completely swollen Finley River, which is my favorite place to take my pup, Jake...

...Jake and I are both itching for the park to dry out and the tape to come off that bridge!

WRITING: THE WAITING GAME

Whether you’ve published ten books or are waiting to snag that first publishing deal, if you’ve ever submitted anything, you know writing is a waiting game.

You wait…and often wait…and wait…for response from an agent or editor after you send off that query. You wait for the thumbs-up to announce book deals or glowing reviews. You wait. You wait.

Right now, I’m waiting for the official release of my second novel, PLAYING HURT. The video below allows you a glimpse into my life as I await that release date…

All you writers out there: What are you waiting on? And how are you passing the time?

INAUGURAL SKYPE VISIT

Yep, that’s right…I’ll be Skyping into a Borders in Vegas tomorrow—my first “visit” to The Silver State.

Which makes me glad that at least one corner of my house is put together. (My renovations make the place look like a battered revision…you know the sort: coffee rings, waded pages, scratched out passages, none of which would make any sense to anyone who happened to pick up the manuscript.)

And in addition to the half-stained quarter round, the boxes of flooring, the piles of yet-to-be-shelved books, we also have signs that proclaim the piano a “No Tool Zone,” or offer gentle reminders such as this:

“ATTENTION!!!!

He who removes this blue tape will die an agonizing death involving methodical dismemberment and the slow removal of eyeballs (which will subsequently be sold as earrings).

Thanks,
The Management.”

Ah well, at least we haven’t destroyed our senses of humor along the way…

…But I’m seriously in a twitter about Vegas! Wish me luck…

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Bunch of area schools are back in session as of this week…No matter how much time separates me from that last commencement ceremony, I always think of late August (rather than January) as the beginning of a new year.

There’s just something about a blank composition notebook, a freshly sharpened #2, a perfect pink eraser that hasn't touched a single mistake…always makes me feel all-over tingly and a little out of breath, like a new adventure is about to unfold…

SIMPLE PLEASURES

Watermelon. Tank top. Potato salad. Flip-flops.

Sounds like some sort of Child’s Garden of Verses rhyme (yes, wouldn’t we all still like to go up in a swing?), but actually, it’s my plan of action for the Fourth of July…that, and sitting on the back porch, where I can view the sky-encompassing fireworks from a nearby country club. Probably while humming “Yankee Doodle Dandy” or “Born in the USA” (or, has been the case the past few days, the guitar riff / bass line of “Smooth Criminal”) while downing a cherry limeaid (my newest addiction...and as hot as it's been, the drink really is an -aid, not an -ade).

Ahhhhh…
