FOLLOW FRIDAY #5

I'm back for another Follow Friday! Love this meme...

This week, the question is basically, "Which book would you write yourself into and what role would you play in that book?"

Weeeell...I sort of already did.

Both of my published books (A BLUE SO DARK and PLAYING HURT) are 100% fictitious. The events and characters are complete figments of my own imagination.

...But there's just something about writing in first person. Bits of myself naturally leak out. My humor, my observations, drips of my own personality become part of my characters. And it doesn't matter how unlike me my characters might seem at first. I even see bits of myself in Clint, the male protagonist from PLAYING HURT.

So in a way, I feel as though I am very much a part of both of my books. (I don't think I'm the only writer who feels this way, either. I think this is part of the reason why written work always feels so very personal to the author...)

New followers, please leave a comment so I can head on over to your blog! (Also, be sure to check out my last post...we're looking for fabulous topics at my YA group author blog, YA Outside the Lines!)

  3. I'm not a writer but I can imagine that writing in first person would make it almost impossible not to allow a little bit of yourself to leak in. Honestly, I think that's what can make or break the realism of a character.

  4. I love when authors tell me that certain characters or aspects of their characters are a reflection of themselves. I feel like I get a better understanding and feel close to the novel then.

  7. I also like books that reflect a part of the author. My favorite is "Resurrection" by Tolstoi.
The book I have translated, "The Little Black Fish" also has some biographical tenor. The most unbelieveable part is the ending of the book. The author, Samad Beh-Rang, faced the same fate as that of the hero he had created.

  9. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm a new follower. The one novel I started writing, and got the farthest with, my main character is kind of based on me, and like you it was just easiest for me to write in first person.

  12. Thanks for the follow! Following back. :)

Great answer, too. One of the minor characters in my in-progress novel has begun to look and sound suspiciously like me. She's definitely somebody else, but it's amazing how much of myself sneakily leaked on to the page.

  17. I feel the same. My characters are not me, but I know I inject some of my traits into them.
